Railroad Track Maintenance - A

Kershaw Family Tradition

Based in Montgomery, AL, Knox Kershaw Inc. was started in 1924 by Royce Kershaw, Sr. as the Royce Kershaw Company. In August 1983 the company’s name was changed to Knox Kershaw Inc.

Mr. Kershaw specialized in railroad track construction.  By 1956 the Royce Kershaw Company had built, reconditioned or removed over four thousand miles of track throughout the United States.

Pioneers of the Ballast Regulator

During World War II, Royce Kershaw Sr. invented the ballast regulator and cribbing machine to take the place of scarce   labor.  In 1946 he diverted part of his energies from the Royce Kershaw Company to the design and development of railway trackwork machinery.  In this venture he organized Kershaw Manufacturing Company, Inc.

As Mr. Kershaw’s activities in the manufacturing business began to take more of his time, he gradually phased out of railway track construction.  In 1962 he began developing ballast-undercutting equipment and used the Royce Kershaw Company to provide service to those railroads that preferred to contract this work, rather than buy and operate the equipment themselves.

On August 29, 1983, Kershaw Manufacturing Company bought out all the stock belonging to Knox Kershaw making Royce Kershaw, Jr. the controlling stockholder.  The Royce Kershaw Company bought out the stock belonging to Royce Kershaw, Jr. making Knox Kershaw the sole owner.  The name was then changed from the Royce Kershaw Company to Knox Kershaw Inc.

In 1993 Knox Kershaw Inc. introduced the first KBR 900 Ballast Regulator.  The introduction of this revolutionary machine signaled the start of track machine manufacturing, earning Knox Kershaw Inc. the reputation as a manufacturer of quality railroad equipment.  To expand its service capabilities to its customers and meet increased demand for quality equipment, Knox Kershaw Inc. built a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in 1998, headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama.  In March 2002, Knox Kershaw Inc. sold its track maintenance division to Balfour Beatty, a UK Company. Unsurpassed experience in Railway Maintenance

Today, Knox Kershaw Inc. is in the business of manufacturing and remanufacturing railway track maintenance machines and spare parts for both domestic and international customers.  Knox Kershaw Inc. operates on a foundation of over 400 years of combined experience in the design, service, operation, and building of track equipment.

The current employees and agents of Knox Kershaw Inc. combine for in excess of 380 years of experience in the design, service, operation, and building of railroad track maintenance equipment.

Knox Kershaw Inc has a proven record of being responsive to our customer’s product support needs.

It is standard practice to have a Service Representative on site when a new machine is delivered.  This representative spends at least 2 days training the operator and mechanic as needed.  Also, any machine start-up problems are addressed at this time.  The need to have service parts readily available is recognized; therefore KKI carries a full line of inventory to be able to respond to its customer needs.  Typically, when a machine warranty problem is identified, replacement parts are over–night shipped the same day.  Also, if a Service Representative is needed at the machine to address any warranty problem areas, he is typically dispatched the same day.  This level of commitment has made KKI the customer service leader in the industry.
